[net.pets] Bugs in the house - a different approach

rcj@burl.UUCP (Curtis Jackson) (02/01/86)

I have two cats, one male, one female. The female is allergic to
flea saliva (bites); this is apparently a pretty common malady. It causes
her to lose hair on her neck, head, and upper back. She also has hormonal
problems that cause her to lose hair around the back of her body.

The hormonal problems are cured by keeping her on birth control pills
(Ovaban, a "pet" variety), but I didn't know what to do about fleas --
you can't use anything that leaves a residue because of the grooming
habits. Then I saw the late-night TV commercial for the BUG-AWAY.

This little monster emits sound at frequencies from 30KHz to 65KHz;
outside the hearing range of humans and all pets except monkeys,
rodents, and members of these animal families. It pounds out the
noise at a pressure of 130db; pretty intense. I know that it works
because they use them in many large public buildings to keep rats out --
Miami Stadium, for example.

I got it in last night and will let people know how well it works when
the weather turns warmer and the fleas come out again. Because the
little beasties can become acclimated to a particular frequency if they
stick around long enough, the frequency is selectable and they suggest
you change it a little once every month or so.
