[net.pets] Electronic Cat/Pet Door

delanie@trsvax (02/28/86)

I saw an interesting ad in a Hammacher Schlemmer Catalog for an
electronic pet door. I know nothing about the door or its
reliability, but had been reading the discussion on pet doors and
thought some might want to know about this. The ad reads:

THE ELECTRONIC CAT DOOR. This is the only
cat door that is opened exclusively by a
specially coded key worn on your cat's collar
so only your pet may enter, preventing stray
animals from entering your home. Unlike other
pet doors, this model installs in doors, walls,
and even glass patio doors and uses a patented
full magnetic seal to prevent drafts and keep out
insects and during rain and snow. A unique 4-way
locking system lets you set the door to open from
either side (allowing your cat to come and go
freely), from only one side (letting your cat exit
or enter only), or to lock completely, so you can
regulate your pet's rounds without interrupting
your own activities. The door can be set for
manual operation and may be used by small dogs
with shoulder widths of less than 6 3/4 inches.
Uses four AA batteries (included) that last up
to one year; test feature lets you check battery
condition. Frame is ABS plastic; door is acrylic.
	Height: 8 3/4 inches. Width: 8 3/4 inches.
	Price $99.95.
	Post paid and Unconditionally Guaranteed.

The address of Hammacher Schlemmer is 147 East 57th Street,
New York, NY 10022. They also have a store in Chicago. Their
toll free number is 1-800-543-3366.

Once again, I don't anything about the company of the product.
I just found the catalog at work and the rest was history.

Electronic pet doors? What will they think of next? I much prefer
to have real live pets. With computerization taking over all the
jobs on the market, isn't the position of Pet safe anymore?
I admit they eat less, require less litterbox maintenance, and accrue
much smaller vet bills, but that's missing the point!
Down with electonic pets!!
