Do the CP/M directories on MC vae things that are substantially different than
public domain stuff available through user groups and the like?

As I view the CPM directory on MC, no. The programs there come in
from users groups, RCPM systems, and program authors, and a lot of
the software turns around and goes out to users groups and RCPM
systems. For software to move out of MC to users groups et al, however,
someone has to try it, deem it to be of value, and do the work of the
move itself. Hence, not all software in CPM on MC may find its way to
users groups.
