From: mknox <mknox@utexas-11.ARPA> Can anyone point me to a word processing program for CP/M-80 which supports true proportional spacing? Old faithless (WORDSTAR) only uses it to adjust the overall white space, but does not actually try to get more characters~r on a line. It's better than nothing, but not much. Commercial or public domain, either one. tnx MKNOX at UTEXAS-11

From: Bob Bloom (TECOM) <bbloom@brl> Old faithless (WORDSTAR) DOES support true proportional spacing! Use the ^P toggle - this is undocumented in the normal user manual but is in the customization notes. -bob

From: Larry Seiler <Seiler@mit-xx> Mark of the Unicorn's Scribble text formatter is very similar to Scribe (Trademark of Unilogic) and does support proportional spacing. It also does lots of other neat things, like automatic section numbering, footnotes, etc. etc. Not only that, they sell it to you with most of the source code, so you can change anything you don't like, if you feel so moved. Price is around $150, or you can get it together with the Mince text editor (looks a lot like EMACS, and comes with most of the source code) for $250. Or, if youlike your formatter integrated into your editor, you can buy Final Word for about $250 and have both (but no source code). Enjoy, Larry PS - It really shouldn't be necessary to say that I don't have anything to do with products mentioned in my messages, so in the future I won't. -------

From: Charlie Strom <CSTROM@mit-mc> Wordstar does indeed support proportional spacing of sorts if you preface the file with a ^P, but this is not TRUE proportional spacing since the latter must take the individual character sets of each typestyle into account. Wordstar has a table of character spacings resident in WS.COM, but it is not easily alterable for convenient printwheel change. We can only hope that Micropro will soon turn some attention to matters such as this as well as reasonably servicing the dot matrix printers.

From: Charlotte D. Mooers <Mooers@bbna> The SpellBinder word processing program supports true proportional spacing. It has tables of characters widths, and the ability to create others. I haven't used it with a proportional spacing type wheel, but I am persuaded that it works well. The SpellBinder program includes a programming language, called MSPEAK, which is nice for writing little routines, and a number of specialized programs written in MSPEAK. The documentation is not as clear as it might be, however, and the formatting capabilities are not as rich as, say, the Final Word. There is no automatic numbering of sections, and no ability to make an index. SpellBinder is produced by Lexisoft, Inc. of Davis, California. ---Charlotte
