> (Feb) 28: ** SST CAL TOUR '85 ** > HUSKER DU, MINUTEMEN, MEAT PUPPETS, SACCHARINE TRUST, > Keytone, Palo Alto > Product Update: > > HUSKER DU: New album _New Day Rising_ OUT NOW! Locals who miss this concert might as well take down their freak flags. Husker Du, who began their career as the quintessential no-technique pure-spirit, high-velocity, power-trio (Land Speed Record is a blinding testament to just how effective `beginner's mind' can be), have recently displayed an explosive creativity that has won over minds and hearts utterly remote from the insane world of hardcore punk rock. Wild and tender combine to express exhilarating humanistic statements on their most recent effort `New Day Rising'. I'd think that 60's fans would find much appealing in this band, from their refurbishing of McGuinn's guitar style to the childlike wonder in their spirit. As in `Zen Arcade', intensity, speed, and ferocity are undiminished since the days of `Land Speed Record'. One of the few cases I know where increased technique has not replaced integrity and vigor. Dead fans (Dead Kennedys, Millions of Dead Cops, Grateful Dead..) should make a point of catching the Meat Puppets. The only band I know that specializes in cosmic country-thrash, this most peculiar arizona trio is fully capable of extreme avante-garde hardcore violence, delicate lyricism, insipid cornpone moaning, and gentle humor. Sample lyrics: > Many a hand has scaled the grand old face of the plateau > some belong to strangers and some to folks you know > holy ghosts and talk show hosts are planted in the sand > to beautify the foothills and shape them in their hands > There's nothing on top but a bucket and a mop > and an illustrated book about birds > you'll see a lot up there but don't be scared > who needs action when you've got words > When you're finished with the mop then you can stop > and look at what you've done > the plateau's clean, no dirt to be seen > and the work it took was fun ---- > I cannot see see my whole expanse > I cannot see the end of me > ..the infinity stored deep inside of me -michael
