From: Jerry E. Pournelle <POURNE@mit-mc> Back before the big ARPA split, I could download files to my system with MITE, which sends XMODEM protocol (and could also do PLINK and I guess a couple of others). Now I get nothing, and it is a comprehensive drag since I have to reset the machine to break the losing send, then find a free TIP, then log back on to kill that failed job. Sigh. If there is anything a science fiction writer/columnist could do in return, I would like a favor from o someone: from time to time could download some of my files to 8" disk (SSSD IBM format to be sure we don't get problems) and send by US Snail. I will gladly pay for the service, and perhaps an autographed book or two would be useful as thanks? I do not really understand TIPS and su ch, and MITE tells you NOTHING other than "T" for "timed out" or "R" for retry; MModem gets the R's in quantity , Lmodem (which also used to work for me) gets 2 r's and a string of T's. Neither seems a very useful message. Maybe my enthusiasm for MITe (because when it's working it is really easy to use) is misplaced. Anyway, I could use help, if theres anyone with time and capability of downloading files. This is insanity; there has to be a way to do this, but I don't know it. JEP
