[net.micro.cpm] dysan head alignment program/disk

CS.Temin@UTEXAS-20.ARPA (02/20/84)

From: Aaron Temin <CS.Temin@UTEXAS-20.ARPA>

I recall there being a program in the CPM directories from Dysan that is
reputed to aid in aligning disk drive heads. I FTP'ed to Simtel-20, but
it was being very uncooperative about allowing me to peruse the
directories. Could someone give me a full pathname to the file (I think
its root name is DDD)? Also, has anyone actually used the program
successfully?

Thanks,
-aaron

Aaron (et al)
Pathname to the Dysan DDD program for disk drive head alignment:

(FTP from SIMTEL20, ANONYMOUS login, of course)

MICRO:<CPM.DSKUTL>DDD.ASM.1
                  DDD.DOC.1
                  DDD1.ASM.1

Nope, haven't used it myself (don't have the special Dysan disk).

Incidentally, if you want to see a directory (a SINGLE directory),
DIR MICRO:<CPM.directoryname><ESC><ESC> works pretty good -- IF you know
the directory name. Else...you gotta download (or set up the FTP transfer
to 7 bit ASCII so you can send it to TTY:) MICRO:<CPM>CPM.CRCLST.nn

You can get the latest CPM.CRCLST by DIR MICRO:<CPM><ESC><ESC>.

David - A couple things in your note concerning the whereabouts of the Dysan
DDD program caught my eye: What are the escapes in the FTP sequences for ?
Our UNIX FTP doesn't use them. Our syntax is:

     ftp "micro:<cpm.dirname>filename" local_filename

The quotes are there to keep UNIX happy, since the < and > characters are
special in UNIX. Second, I don't think you need to append the version number
to the filename (as in filename.nn). I have never been refused by a TOPS-20
system, and I have never used the version number. Have you had difficulties
if you didn't use it ?

Yes, it depends on the FTP user program. The TOPS20 ftp server
defaults unspecified parts of the filename to *, so just a
DIR FILENAME will actually find FILENAME.*. By the way, the
tops20 filename format is <directory>filename.extension.version,
its only a sometime used cpm convention that the extension contain
the program version number. directory, filename, and extension can
all be up to 39 characters long, and version is a number less than
some large decimal number. The tops20 FTP code also contains a
check so that an wildcard directorys cannot be used (presumably,
this is to prevent people from using large amounts of CPU time
doing a directory of the entire file system). Perhaps this
restriction should be removed from the SIMTEL system ?

Try MICRO:<CPM.DSKUTL> as the directory on SIMTEL20. You'll find
the original generic DDD.ASM and a new one DDD1.ASM which I believe
is for a CCS disk controller. You'll find DDDTAR.LBR on TCBBS
Dearborn, MI (313) 846-6127, which is for the Tarbel controller.
