[net.micro.cpm] Help needed: Vadic Autodial Upgrade

hoffman@pitt.UUCP (Bob Hoffman) (03/06/84)

While perusing the files available on the Thousand Oaks Technical
RCP/M (805-492-5472), I found a couple of notes on their RBBS
describing a method for upgrading a Vadic VA3451 modem to autodial.
The original note indicated that a ROM change was needed as well as
some switch and jumper changes. I got the impression from the note
that the upgrade converted a 'vanilla' VA3451 to an auto-dial version.
I figured this would be a great addition for my old modem, as I bought
it when the 3451s first came out. I have the two-switch version, i.e.
no Voice/Data/Manual Answer switch. I am unsure, however, if my modem
even has the necessary hardware to interact with the terminal as does
the regular autodial version (VA3451PA).

The file on that RCP/M was called VADICAM.OBJ, and was the image of
a 2732 EPROM to be used in the upgrade. Putting that EPROM in my
Vadic caused the DSR and RI lights to flash alternately, but nothing
else happens. Now, here's my problem:

1. The note was left by Brett Berg, sysop of the Northern Utah
RCP/M system (801-776-5024). He indicated that there was a
separate file of instructions for this upgrade. This file was
not available on the Thousand Oaks RCP/M.

2. He also indicated that this was available on his RCP/M as well.
I have tried calling that number and find that it is not in
service. This number has been listed in the last three RCP/M
lists (45,46,47). Does anyone know if there is a new number
for the Utah system? Does anyone know Brett Berg?

Since I've seen nothing on Info-Micro or Info-CPM, I've been wondering
if anyone else out there has seen or tried this upgrade. Any help
will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I checked into the Thousand Oaks system yesterday and found
a file called "VADICMOD.FQX", and thought this might be the docu-
mentation I had been seeking. No luck, however. This was Lauren
Weinstein's recent Usenet article about the Vadic "unattended
disconnect" switch! -b
