Seems as though someone drops one or two characters per 630-buffer. After consultation w/ the folks at Kaypro, the problem has been narrowed down to a bug in the ROM. They are sending me V. 1.9E (not e) and CP/M 2.2G, which they claim solves the problem. We'll see ...
