[net.music] Still Yet More Prince/Hendrix

cs2532aa@unm-cvax.UUCP (02/22/85)

I have never, repeat, NEVER heard anyone outside of this newsgroup actually
make a comparison between the musical styles of Prince and Hendrix. The only
similarity between the two is a small part of EITHER artist's importance as
a whole, namely the overt onstage sexuality of the performers in question (and
in Hendrix's case, the only time I've actually seen this kind of thing is in
the sequence in "Monterey Pop" where he orgasmically squirts lighter fluid
onto his guitar and lights it -- yeah, really relevant to the guy's music,
huh?) I happen to enjoy both artists' music, and I am sick and tired of seeing
postings that say, in effect, "Oooh! You like (Prince/Duran Duran/DEVO/etc.)??
COOTIES!!!!!". This is grade-school stuff. If you don't like a musician's
music, or their style, or the color of their latest album label, then say so,
but don't try justifying it by screaming "blasphemy" (like ANY artist other
than Janis Joplin is worth worshipping :-) or by referring to them as "greasy"
or by accusing them of "selling out" (whateverthehell that means -- the closest
I've ever been able to figure is "become successful"). Maybe we should create
net.music.ihate so all the people who waste their time actually HATING artists
instead of not buying their albums and not going to their concerts can flame at
each other until they're blue in the mouth.

I happen to like ALL of the above mentioned groups and individuals, including
Duran Duran and DEVO. I guess people like me who enjoy all kinds of music
are an anachronism nowadays. *Sigh*.
