I think Pryor is supposed to look exactly like Jean Grey, but unfortunately Byrne did the definitive
Jean, and then left. We never got a chance to see Smith's Jean,
for obvious reasons, so the resemblance isn't all that obvious,
especially since Byrne and Smith have radically different styles.
We'll just have to see what happens, I guess.
As for the New Mutants, well, it does have everything that made the
X-Men popular, thanks to the Chris Claremont School of Overwriting.
Maybe N.M. will get people to view X-Men more critically.
