[net.comics] Wives and Byrne

parks@kpno.UUCP (08/17/83)

Pardon me, but I'm new at this.

It seems to me that Ralph Digby (Dongbi? Dagoba?) also has a
non-super wife (he's DC's Elongated Man). Of course, there are
dozens of folks who have 'normal' girl-friends.

In general, I think John Byrne is ---->| |<---- that close to
God. Well, perhaps I exaggerate a trifle. There have certainly
been better single stories, and better multi-issue stories, but
Byrne's continuing quality has resulted in an excellence and
consistency which has been unmatched since the early days of the
new X-Persons. I am much more impressed by a series which is
always good than by a single superb issue in a year's worth of
muck.

What, pray tell, are Warrior 10 and Grendel? Would, I say, would
you be so obliging as to give us/me a capsule revue of these?
With the high price of comics nowadays, it's a real decision to
add something new to the list.

Speaking of alternate sources, have you (collective, plural) seen
"D'arc Tangent" ? It's by Phil Foglio (of The Dragon, Swank, and
occasionally Starblaze books), and Freff (of who knows where. Or
for that matter, who knows what. What is a Freff, anyway?) It
is a marvelous story (installment 1), and the black-and-white
artwork is clean and professional. Unfortunately, it's only
published every 4 months or so, and I have no idea when issue #2
is due out. The story is one of those that have been plotted
years in advance, and issue one contains a variety of prequels,
hints, and clues. Pick it up.

Does anyone out there in net-land read Elfquest?? I have loads
of things I would ask about EQ and Cerebus (the kid in the bunny
suit) (excuse me, I have a fetish for parenthesis) but there is
no point in discussing these if no-one reads the magazines.

                                    Well, here's hoping that this
                                      gets transmitted,

Freff is an "mainstream" (as opposed to comic) artist. Those who
have read "Titan" by John Varley have seen his work.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I don't think Byrne really deserves such
effusive praise (even though I haven't looked at his work recently). I thought
his work on the X-Men was excellent, but that was mainly due to Terry Austin's
inking. I looked at some of Byrne's stuff from his stint with the FF (is he
still doing that?), and it seemed very lifeless compared with the X-Men art.
What Byrne lacks is a style, something to distinguish him from the morass of
Neal Adams androids invading the industry. Well, that's just my humble
opinion....

Actually, the main reason I'm posting this is that I read Elfquest. Yes,
there are others of us here and there, although we're not very vocal, it
seems. Recently I posted a little piteous query ("Does anybody out there read
Elfquest, or am I the only one?"), and immediately got a fusillade of letters
in my mailbox to the effect that there are actually other EQ readers out
there somewhere. It's not surprising, considering that EQ is just about the
most successful and well-known comic off the mainstream. I've been reading
it for 3 years; I'm a full-fledged fan club member; I've got all sorts of
paraphernalia in my room (posters, stickers, etc.); and I'm generally an
Elfquest freak. I've never read Cerebus, though! What is it, anyway? I've
seen it mentioned other places in this newsgroup, so maybe I'll try to get
some issues.

Does anybody know anything about Nelvana? That's the film company that's
going to do the EQ animated film. Are they any good, or can we expect a
hatchet-job (a la "Lord of the Rings")?
