It all started when a couple of friends, John & Donna Spert sent me the
following:
Donna noticed that Marvel and DC have published their December issues and
suggested we do a set of awards for the past "year". So, with the serious ones
first:
Best new artist - Butch Guice
Best new comic - a tie between American Flagg and John Sable
Worst new comic - Crystar
Worst imitation of a comic - Americomics 1
Best limited series - Green Arrow
Most carefully worked out society - American Flagg
Best planned plots - X-men
Holy Ghost Award to Thor for the best resurrection of a god since 33AD
Dracula Award to Katy Keene for things best left dead
Monty Python's Penguin Award to Green Lantern - "It's time for the boy
outside your spaceship to explode."
Isaac Newton Award to Marvel Super Special 27 and 26 for outstanding
achievements in mathematics
Gift Horse's Mouth Award to Marvel Super Special 27 for emphasizing
short-term gains
[I believe they refer to Marvel's jumping the gun and releasing the
adaptation of RETURN OF THE JEDI before the movie was out.]
23-Skidoo Award to Red Circle for proving that outdated concepts stay that
way
Paul Masson Award to Pacific and Eclipse for never publishing a comic
before its time
******************************************************************************
So, I sent back my list:
Best new artist: Butch Guice, with Paul Smith a close second.
Best not-so-new artist: John Byrne, with Walt Simonson a close second.
Best old artist: Will Eisner (the Spirit reprint mag).
Best writer: Howie Chaykin.
Best new comic: AMERICAN FLAGG!
Best old comic: the new-and-improved THOR.
Best limited series: GREEN ARROW.
Best cover: MARVEL FANFARE #6 by P. Craig Russell.
Best single-issue serious story: The Spotlight on Cosmic Boy in LSH #297.
(Actually, this is really the second of a 2-part story, picking up the
story from one of the many plots going on in the previous issue). If one
wants to include graphic novels, I think I'd choose THE STAR SLAMMERS.
Best multi-issue serious story: Jon Sable's origin.
Best single-issue serious-but-funny story: DC COMICS PRESENTS #59 (Superman
and the Legion of Substitute Heroes vs. the Ambush Bug).
Best multi-issue serious-but-funny story: AMERICAN FLAGG! #1-3.
Best Annual: FANTASTIC FOUR (Of course, all the annuals aren't out yet for
this year, but I think a cut-off point for the annuals can be those that
came out with the December issues).
I don't think that I can really honestly list any worsts, since I don't pick up
anything I don't like, but I'll list a few frivolous awards:
The Blunt Object Award for subtlety goes to the TEEN TITANS DRUG AWARNESS
SPECIAL. Do you think they're trying to tell us something?
The Square Peg in a Round Hole Award goes to CAMELOT 3000 for the most un-
workable concept made to work.
The Doctor Jekyll Award goes to Mike Barr for BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS for
showing us the dark side of Batman's schizophrenia.
The Ticky Tacky Award for crudeness in the line of duty goes to Gerry Conway
for having Black Canary show us how big Oliver's, uh, arrow is.
The Two Covers Are Better Than One Award goes to the December issues of
TEEN TITANS & BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS, which fit together to form one
larger piece of art (or hadn't you noticed?).
The Boy, Now THAT'S Kinky! Award goes to Bug and Marionette. I wonder if he
can use his rocket lance as a marital aid.
The Baited Breath Award (tie) goes to Eclipse for SCORPIO ROSE #2 and to
Pacific for MS. MYSTIC #2. OK, let's see who can hold out the longest!
*******************************************************************************
Well, as it turned out, MS. MYSTIC won. It's first issue came out before
SCORPIO ROSE #1, and it's second issue came out after SCORPIO ROSE #2.
