Has anyone seen "D'arc Tangent" by Phil Foglio and Freth (Frith? Fripp? Frapp? I always forget.) I think it's one hot book and would like to hear from D'arc Tangent fans. It's a future with a future, shall we say, with a robot (a member of the Arc-Tangent model series) that accidentally-on-purpose gets his brain paths all snarled up with some 17th-century swordsman...hence the title. But there's a lot more going on there, and it's got incredibly beautiful artwork printed with dark ink on white paper, the way things should be. It's got the first big-eyed-kitty telepathic aliens what ain't just cute. I love it!

From: Mike Ciaraldi <ciaraldi> Another vote for D.T. (phone home?) from Phil Foglio and Freff. I liked it, once I figured out the 5 prologues. Different, worth reading, probably to the taste of most who like alternative comics. A little heavy for mainstream. Personal notes--the editorial gives thanks to Alice, who lives here in Rochester. --I met Phil at URCON last September (he was guest of honor with Joan Vinge and Chris Claremont and Hal Clement). Got him to do a sketch of me with D.T. The robot is leaning on my shoulder, I have a look of awe on my face, and am wearing a T-shirt that says "Honest Mike's Robot Repair-- Mars, Titan, Io."

I also read "D'arc Tangent". I agree -- it's GOOD. I was very impressed with both the writing and the artwork. Not cheap at $2.00 but I think it's worth it. BTW, the other writer/artist's name is Freff. Does anyone know when issue #2 will be out? --Marta Greenberg {decvax|ittvax}!sii!meg

Yes, I liked the first issue of D'Arc Tangent; interesting art, gorgeous cover, and lots of fascinating beginnings. Which leads me to my major gripe: WHERE THE *&^*&^ IS THE SECOND ISSUE??? My copy bears the cover date of August 1982 and claims to be a quarterly; I bought it in March at Boskone, subscribed in May, and that's the last I've heard. Have Freff and Phil Foglio gone into hibernation??? To my taste, D'arc Tangent suffers from first-issue disease: so much time is spent introducing characters and situations that very little actually happens. They're interesting enough characters and situations, but they've been floating in limbo for a year now! Has anybody out there heard when or if there will be an issue two? #R:dartvax:-24800:ucbcad:5500001:000:258 ucbcad!kalash Sep 29 09:07:00 1983 From a friend of Freff, the word is that D'Arc Tangent II should be out reasonably soon. Freff is supposedly "finishing" up the last of the art. I realize this is NOT a hard and fast date, but at least you now know something IS happening... Joe Kalash

For those who have been wondering what ever happened to D'Arc Tangent number two: wait no longer! I got a note in the mail from Ffantasy Ffactory. It says that Freff and Phil Foglio have suffered "artistic differences" and that "We haven't said anything in public until now because we thought these production problems could be resolved. We were wrong." The note goes on to say that Ffantasy Ffactory itself (i.e. the partnership of Freff, Phil Foglio, and the publisher, Melissa Singer) is dissolving, but that D'ARC TANGENT will continue in some form. I quote: "... The good news is that despite Phil and Freff's "divorce", D'ARC TANGENT *will* continue although in what form, and from what publisher, and in whose hands, we don't know for certain. Phil wants to carry on. So does Freff. It might be either one, or ... it might be both. Think about that for a moment: Phil and Freff writing and drawing totally independent D'ARC TANGENTs, each carrying the storyline and the visual style in the direction he sees fit. " That's all I know about the matter; subscribers' money will be refunded in due course. -- Betsy Perry decvax!dartvax!betsy

I had three separate reactions upon reading the article on D'Arc Tangent. One was: "Drat, I never thought I WOULD see the second issue." (I very much feel that way about the Rocketeer, by the way). Two was: "You see, that is why I don't subscribe to NEW comic companies. I trust in Steve Geppi to have my comics and he doesn't require money up front." Three was: "Hmm, the thought of two separate D'Arc Tangents is rather intreging! It certainly would confuse people, but then it could be consid- ered to be competition taken to its logical conclusion." Thank you VERY much for the information. At least now I know what happened.
