Well I just finished Matt Wagner's "Mage" I don't think it was great, but I
did like it and I do think the book and Matt Wagner have potential.

Wagner's dialogue is terse. I like that. Every once in a while it seems a
little clumsy. He tells his story with dialogue and pictures. There are no
expository paragraphs to help out. It reminds me a bit of Howard Chaykin's
Cody Starbuck stuff.

The art is not quite professional. I like it anyway. I think Wagner does a
reasonable job of laying out panels and pages. I think he needs a little work
on his inking technique and the use of contrasts for emphasis. He gets sloppy
sometimes.

Mirth and Matchstick as characters haven't become boring yet. I still hope
that Mirth's magic will be mysterious, more like the Phantom Stranger than
Doc Fate.

It is still too early for me to decide about Mage. This first installment
is obviously just the beginning of a looong story. I'll wait and see if there
are any future issues before I decide. So far though, I am interested.
