[net.comics] Reviews of the Latest batch... a few spoilers

moriarty@uw-june (Jeff Meyer) (03/13/84)

Opinions on a few recent comics (have only gotten through half of my monthly
load... but these look most prevalent)

THOR #344
"He must be... SPIDER=MAN!!!" Harharharharhar.... Simonson deserves
his rep....., plus he adds a great sense of humor to Loki.

HERCULES #4
Not as good as the previous mini-series (I predicted the ending
several issues ago), but Layton does now what not to leave it on ("Oh boy!
Can I watch?").

ALPHA FLIGHT #11 and FANTASTIC FOUR 267 & my two cents worth on Byrne
I think these two issues sum up what is so good about John, and one
of his (very) few drawbacks... The big complaint is the "death of a
character stuff; this "tune in next week to see someone buy the farm" is
ridiculous. I thought Reed & Sue's loss at the end was well done, but It
would have been %100 better if it came out of left field, not to mention the
morbidity of the ads (take a look at Alpha Flight... is Jim Shooter making
odds on which member snuffs it?)
Good things: lots. Great art, great characterization, small asides
(Lankowski and Banner together in both issues), great POVs (I always feel
like using film criticism for Byrne's art), and moments that just get
you.... the part in FF when the sanitarium intern looks at the cut-ups
Octavious has been making and notices that they're all octupuses... a truly
original and superbly done montage. I think this death glitch tends to be
more a symptom of Marvel than anything else.

STAR TREK #5
Don't worry about the art, the inker's on vacation... lots moe nice
touches, and Barr is building up a nice repatory of supporting actors...
Sulu might be heading for that command he wanted eventually. A great
net.comics topic would be who you'd like to see in the Star trek comic: My
choices would be Mudd and Gary Seven (his masters might let him hop time...).

NEXUS #6
God, I love this comic, if only for it's outlandish humor... I wanna
use these quotes for the next 2 months, Mr. Baron....

BADGER #4
Even better humor, but get this one, it's apparently Jeff Butler's
last art issue, and he's very good ("Hellzapopin! He's freaked out!").

JOURNEY #7
I know I keep harping on it, but this mag is truly GREAT, plus it is
done with such sweetness (the letters page is great)....

CEREBUS #Whatever
I like humor, good humor, as you've no doubt noticed... and it is
good here.... but are we ever going to get back to some Conan-style
adventures? I LOVED High Society, but I really miss mercenary humor (On the
road again....). However, one of the funniest sight gags EVER put into
comics (the ripped pants... WHOOF!).

BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS #11
I know many don't like this, but the Batman is done so well... just
the kind of guy you'd like to have on your side, because he scares the HELL
out of you... and Aparo's art is good; it was wasted for so many years with
that cretin Bob Haney (and I do not use that adjective lightly) in B&B.

X-MEN #182
So THAT'S what happened to Rossi. Still boring, and I really like
Rogue. The Hellfire club is really gearing up (maybe for the elections...
perhaps that's how Hart has pulled ahead). Shoot, two seperate mags have
come up with a mutant I had thought up that no one (in Marvel) yet.
ERrrrr...

DR. STRANGE #65
If you like Strange, you'll love this.... boy, it's good to see Paul
Smith back in action.

DREADSTAR #Too many
Why do I buy this mag... it is crap.

TEEN TITANS #?
Just very well done in terms of style... we knew from the cover what
was going to happen, yet by letting Dick escape and figure it out himself,
it is much more interesting. PS does the HIVE have to stand for something?
I thought it might be nice by itself...

Haven't read the complete Ms. Tree Series yet, but it looks good, in an
understated way (nice to see something where no one leaps over tall
buildings...). Aztec Ace looks like it has possibilities, and....

Due to popular opinion, I shelled out for Secret Wars #2.... so I may better
crab. Frankly, I'm thinking about sending Moran out to talk to Shooter
(he's been polishing his airgun lately, and it's not wise to leave him
without a job when he's like this).
