[net.comics] Moriarty's latest reviews

I definitely agree with you about THOR #344, ALPHA FLIGHT #11/FF #267,
X-MEN #182, DR. STRANGE #65, and TEEN TITANS #? [43?]. I definitely disagree on
STAR TREK and BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS --- I really feel that Mike Barr just
isn't a very good writer (CAMELT 3000 notwithstanding). I didn't think his
BATMAN ANNUAL quite made it either (partly because I object on philosophical
grounds to the "player on the other side" concept in the way that Barr treats
it).
As for HERCULES, gee willickers, *I* didn't predict the ending! And I
have just the opposite opinion -- I thought this mini-series was far superior
to the first one. I liked the first one, but I couldn't understand why people
were absolutely *raving* about it.
As for DREADSTAR, well, I wouldn't say that it's crap, but it's cer-
tainly not up to what I expect from Starlin. A bit ho-hum.
CEREBUS & JOURNEY: In my opinion, two of the top five comics being pro-
duced today (wellllll... I have to exclude THE SPIRIT and STEVE CANYON in order
to squeeze them in, but since TS and SC are reprint books, that's OK). JOURNEY
has had its ups and downs, but #7 almost had me splitting my sides in laughter
("snow map" indeed!).
As I think I said here before, It took me a while to get warmed up to
NEXUS, but the fifth issue finally did got me hooked, and #6 was a scream! I
think Judah is one of the greatest supporting characters anyone has ever come up
with ("I got it [the Junior Woodchuck Manual] at a used book store in Cynosure")
I can't wait to see how Judah and the Badger work out together (will they become
fast friends or kill each other?). NEXUS is another of my Top Five

[and as I've probably said before, the other two are AMERICAN FLAGG! and THOR].

THE BADGER has its ups and downs, too, though I liked the latest issue. That
guy's nuts!

Have fun reading MS. TREE (in my Top Ten). It's very well done mystery/suspense.
The art isn't terrific, but it's competent and the style fits the story. And
while I certainly can't complain about the prevalence of Beverly Switzlers,
Princess Korianders, Marionettes, Bettys [from "The Rocketeer"], or (from the
sublime to the ridiculous) Cutey Bunnys, it's a pleasant change to see a heroine
who isn't a sex goddess.

I don't suppose I could convince you to try SECRET WARS #3? No, I didn't think
so. Actually, it's still full of bickering superheroes, but there some interest-
ing character bits in it (like the scene with the Wasp and Magneto) [nudge,
nudge, wink, wink].
