[net.comics] Alpha Ralpha Roulette

boyajian@akov68.DEC (03/17/84)

Hey, kiddies, want ta know which Alpha bites the big one? Most of the
guesses so far posted here are wrong (one is right). And, Jeff, remember, it's
supposed to be a member of AF, which Heather Hudson isn't --- yet.
Issue #39 (15 Jan 84) of AMAZING HEROES, is a special 1984 preview issue
in which the staff talks to the writers/artists of all the extant comics to find
out what's in store for this year (it's a good issue to have, if you can still
get one at your local comics store). I quote from John Byrne's discussion of AF:

"In issue #12, during the Omega Flight sequence, on of the
members of Alpha flight will be killed, and the other mem-
bers will react strongly to this proof that even superheroes
	can die.

"...Issues #14 and #15 will team Aurora up with either Puck
or Sasquatch against a new villainess called Gilded Lily..."

"Issues #16 and #17 team up Marrina and Shaman, probably
with Sasquatch joining them in #17...."

"Issue #18 may have another solo story for Puck if he did not
appear in the Gilded Lily story,..."

"Over 1984 Hudson's wife, Heather `is going to come into a
much greater role than she's had until now.'..."

That kind of narrows the field down somewhat. The only ones that Byrne
didn't specificly mention as appearing in future issues are Northstar, Snowbird,
and Guardian. *I* predict that it will be Hudson that will get kicked off, and
that Heather will become the new Guardian in order to avenge his death (my, my,
how trite).

The following is a dramatization of a phone conversation I had with
an old friend of mine back home, and is presented to throw more
gasoline on the fire (and to point out something no one else has
mentioned yet):

ME: So who do *you* think will die in AF #12?
FRIEND: Oh, that's easy -- Northstar.
M: I hope not; the twins are too interesting as twins. But why?
F: Because Northstar is gay and John Byrne hates homosexuals.
M: What!?? (shock, dismay)
F: Sure. Check out #6 ("Aurora's back..."), particularly the scenes
with Jean-Paul's old "friend" ("You didn't tell her *everything*
about me...", J-P's shock at seeing the daughter, etc.).

Well, I checked it out, and while the evidence is not overwhelming,
it does admit of this interpretation. It's also supported in the
Northstar origin story (#9?) -- "You had everything: fame, money,
women... For some reason, the women never seemed to interest you..."

What do you think about this? (And what's so bad about having a gay
superhero, anyway? Imagine the twins fighting over the same guy...
:-) ) And is this true of John Byrne (and mind you, that's just what
my friend said; I don't want to get sued)? It would be a shame to
kill off an interesting character for this reason.

(Incidentally, my bet was for Snowbird, for reasons which no longer
seem valid; my current guess would be Guardian, but that seems rather
like killing off Capt. America, and I wouldn't want to alienate the
Canadian readers like that.)

I confess I forgot to check my AMAZING HEROES, which I now remember
had the list of who was coming up later.

Heather as the new Guardian? Sounds good to me!

How many people have read Slaughterman?
In the first issue he is killed and replaced by his widow.
Since his bulky suit hides his/her physique, everyone assumes
it is the original Slaughterman (who had no secret identity--
everyone knew who he was with the suit on or off).
So, Mrs. S, not wanting to disillusion people, is
leaving the suit on permanently (my interpretation).
This has been written up as "The first transvestite superhero"!

This comics is from Comico, incidentally.

All odds given, I bet Jaime boy bites the big one too. When is someone
going to get the goods on Roxxon and shut 'em down? (I realize this would be
illegal, but hell, let Banner fall back to his Hulk personality and bash in
their corporate offices... it would make ME feel better).
