OK, review time.... AMERICAN FLAGG: 1) "Kitty, kitty my ass!"... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Clint Eastwood couldn't have done better. 2) Probably the best comic I've read in two months.... Chaykin has really got things in high gear. Since this is a war going on, I expect some of the main characters will die, and I will be sorry to see this, as Chaykin's characterization has been excellent. Some of these folks seem almost real (well, as real as you can get in a futuristic hell-hole)... mainly this is GREAT entertainment. THOR: While I've liked whats been going on since Simonson got on board, I haven't really found this as enjoyable as some of his past work (like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, believe it or not), and certainly not great. But here we are starting a plot which is really showing promise of "great". Also, fun to have Thor and Lorelei playing comic relief for the comic. VIGILANTE: Ross Andru is good for this book, and Vig's costume is really very intersting. However, is Wolfman putting much attention into the plot (rhetorical question). No. Is he even sticking around with two Titan books coming out (Non-rhetorical question)? RONIN: RONIN. I've got a lot to say about RONIN. Good points: the script is really working out well, and there are some plot twists in this issue which really threw me for a loop. A finally done twister. Bad points: One, the art. I like it, but no matter how I hold the book (at arm's length, sideways, upside-down), I can't see it as fantastic. The montage of frames is nothing new.... I've seen Dave Sim do this for several years. Just nothing special... maybe one has to see the original paintings. The MAIN thing that bugs me are those quotes on the outside with people who make Miller sound like the Second Coming (after Eisner, I think). Frames in this story that "shocked me into silence"? No way. And comparing Miller to D.W. Griffith is baloney. Eisner never got this kind of lauding. A lot of work has gone into this book, but it's nothing compared to the amount of hype and b*llsh*t that goes into the cover. NEW MUTANTS: Hurry, Bill, Hurry! I can't hold out much longer! THRILLER: When R.L. Flemming leaves (the author) I can't figure if the good points will disappear, or the bad points. One thing is for sure... Trevor Von Eden is the only artist I've ever seen whose art has degenerated instead of progressed. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Get a new artist. The writing is good, though, and the Skull has never been better (even by Englehart). INDIANA JONES: What a great idea... put Larry Lieber on it ("I'm not dead yet!"). I have to admit that I liked the feeling of nostalgia it produces... rather like his old "Where Creatures Roam" stuff. COYOTE: Let's knock off the in-jokes, shall we, and stick to the story? The road runner joke was carried about 24 pages too far. Th-th-th-th-That's it, folks.
