[net.comics] Review of recent comics

A few notes about recent (last couple of weeks) comics:

THOR is getting *very* weird. I always knew there was something fishy about
McBurgers!

First Comics are now on (I think) Hudson paper (it's not as heavy or white as
Baxter, but higher grade than Mando) for the same price. AMERICAN FLAGG! wasn't
as good this time around as it usually is, but it certainly had its points
("Kitty, Kitty my ass!" indeed). I hoped and expected more from the Starslayer/
Grimjack team-up. I find myself beginning to like the supporting character of
Chris Heyman.

MARVEL FANFARE #15 has a Thing story written and drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith
that is quite funny, and has a damn! good art job. It's not recognizably Smith,
and it has one of the best-drawn Things I've seen in a long time.

TEEN TITANS features the new Titan, Jericho, and Dick Grayson in his new identi-
ty of Nightwing. The new identity scene does come across as quite as significant
as when he gave up his Robin identity, but that's OK. Story continues in the
Annual. I'm already convinced that Terra is going to reform, and be the Titan
that kicks the bucket (Boy! first an Alphan dies this month, then a Titan next
month. Who's going to go the month after?) (Oh, I just remembered --- one of the
All-Stars is supposed to bite the big one in the next month or two.)

ZOT! is a new comic by Scott [not Space Angel] McCloud from Eclipse. It's not an
Earth-shattering comic to rank with AMERICAN FLAGG! or THOR or CEREBUS, but I
enjoyed it a lot --- it's *fun*. I highly recommend it.

For those of you who missed STAR*REACH the first time around, I suggest you look
into Eclipses STAR*REACH CLASSICS. Good paper, nice color (most of this material
will be in color for the first time), and excellent stories by some of the best.

X-MEN #183 almost strikes me speechless. Ignore for the moment that I've always
been an X-Men fan. Forget for the moment that the past few issues have been
rather hum-drum. This issue ranks (in my opinion) as one of the top five X-MEN
issues of all time. It's a perfect example of why I like the book so much, re-
gardless of how poor it may get at times. Claremont's had his writing problems
in the past, but his strength has always been in characterization and this issue
has that in spades! For the past 8 or so years, Claremont has given us charac-
ters that seem almost flesh-and-blood and it feels like the emotional pain that
occurs in this issue is happening to real people that I know. A sad, depressing,
painful issue, but one that makes you *feel*.

Well, that's all for know. Today I pick up the latest ALPHA FLIGHT and see who
wins the Alpha Ralpha Roulette! Stay tuned.
