[net.comics] a short review of this week's comics

brad@umcp-cs.UUCP (04/23/84)

Here are some comments on the new comics I got this week. I'll do them in
alphabetical order, DC first and then Marvel. (See, I do read *some*
Marvels)

Camelot 3000 # 11
Well, it's finally here! It was almost worth the wait. It's a
good issue, and obviously a set up for the next, double-sized
issue. I only hope that it doesn't take 3 months to arrive.
Once the series is complete I'm going to sit down and re-read it
at one time. I'm still drooling over Brian Bolland's art.

DC Comics Presents # 72 (Superman and The Phantom Stranger w/ The Joker)
This is the worst comic of the week. Between the bad writing by
Paul Kupperberg and the bad art by Alex Sauvix, it was very hard
to wade through the story. If this series doesn't improve soon,
I may give up on it. (and I've been collecting it since #1)

Detective Comics # 540
The conclusion to the Scarecrow two parter (from Batman # 373) was
good plotwise, but bad artwise. I much prefer Don Newton to Gene
Colan. Still, the plot and characterization makes up for the
bad art. I'm still enchanted with this one.

Fury of Firestorm # 26
This is the second part of the Black Bison trillogy. I wouldn't
recommend this issue to someone looking to try something new. If
you are a Firestorm fan, you know what I mean. It's ok, but not
great. There is nothing new here, just more of the same. I didn't
like Black Bison the first time around, and I don't like him any
	more now.

New Teen Titans # 1
	I love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here we have George Perez unleashed. The art is good enough to be
framed. I liked the way that the changes in Raven's features since
issue one were fit into the plot. This issues seems to fit in a
month or two after TOTT # 44 and the annual. I also assume that
it will fit in very well right after TOTT # 56 where it will be
reprinted. The combat scene shows exactly how powerful Jericho
can be. This is a must buy comic!!

X-Men 184
Another good issue. I like the plot-line with Rachel (continued
from New Mutants # 18). The character Selene seems familiar.
Am I supposed to have seen her before? I wish I had my whole
collection here a school. I'm betting that Rachel isn't the daughter
of Xavier at all, but is Jean Grey's niece. I love the connection
with X-Men 142,143. Clairmont is very good at leaving plot-lines
hanging, only to resolve them later. I'm eager to see if Prof. X
will lead the X-Men or if Storm will. This is another comic that
I can't wait to see the next issue.

Dreadstar # 11
A comic book where none of the heroes appear in the issue. This is
definitely a departure from the norm. I like the Lord Papal's origin
even if it's not overly original. Starlin's art is consistant, and
never a disappointment. Well, that is with the exception of the
cover. Does anyone understand why the Lord Papal turned around in
the last panel of the book?

Jon Sable, Freelance # 15

This was a sort of an Indianna Jones take-off. The good feature for
this issue was the fact that we got to see more of the other side of
Jon. He seems to be fairly cultured. It was nice to see him and
Grey develop a better relationship. The segue to the next issue
was also one of the best I've seen in ages.

That's all the comics that haven't been reviewed before. I've also been
asked by Marv Wolfman to remind you all that he is reading the group and
will reply to any questions that are asked of him. He's anxious to join
in the discussion, but it is hard since he is one step removed from direct
access and posting.

Why does Selene look familiar in the new X-Men?
Becuase she was the villain in the New Mutants sequence
where they go to New Rome and meet Magma.

I figure he turned around because his assistant was trying to
poison him, as he had poisoned his previous superior. Look at the
expressions on his assistants face as the Lord Papal takes the drink.
