[net.comics] 'baxter paper,random musings'

The recent spate of anti-baxter postings made me feel much better;
I had thought I was missing something . My first reaction to baxter
comics was something like ' gee this is nice paper, but it doesn't look
right', and for the most part I still feel that way. I make an exception
for the new Titans book which impressed me in a way the others haven't.
I think however, the best looking paper and printing I have seen lately
has been from FIRST. I understand they have switched printers because
of some sort of legal fray, but even if they win, I hope they don't go
back to the old printer.

Has anyone out there noticed Marvel subscriptions getting slower?
I had gotten used to seeing comics stores get books before I did,
and then I got used to the newsstands getting them before me, but
lately it seems my subscriptions are running a whole month behind the
stands. Even given the price benefits this is getting annoying..

I can't remember anyone mentioning DAREDEVIL or IRON MAN in net.comics
recently, which is a shame. I think Denny O'neil is doing a great job
with both books. He has completely turned around IM ,changing assumptions
that had held for years and making it more interesting than I have ever
seen it. In DD he made a few false starts (after all he did have some
high expectations to live up to), but he has settled down now and is
turning out consistently good stories. In particular, I like his
(long needed) look at the 'noble savage' mythos.

Speaking of Frank Miller (as I just did by implication), does anyone
know why in the world he chose the style of art he is doing for RONIN?
Having seen his work in DD, I know he can do art which is (in my eyes)
better and that he must have changed styles on purpose. I still follow
RONIN, but the art seems to conflict with the story. I find myself
having to spend long periods trying to figure out what each panel is,
before I can go on.

Too bad about Capital. Has anyone heard about WHISPER being picked up
by another house? It was just starting to get interesting. Whatever happens,
I suppose my subscription money is down the drain.

In answer to a recent question, Yes there are some Elfquesters listening.
The end is near though, I hope it doesn't turn out that the planet is
Earth and the time is the past, that would be an ending with too much
finality (it all happened a long time ago...). Unfortunately, I find
that by the time one issue arrives, I have forgotten most of the last
one over the multi-month gap.

Finally, has anyone been following "Spiderman and his Amazing Friends"
on Saturday mornings? It is possibly the best adaptation of comic book
characters to the (stupid) limitations Saturday cartoons that I have yet
seen (despite the "cute" dog). Along with the Warner classics
(sometimes mutilated by censors) it is the only show keeping Saturday
tv from being complete drivel. (has anyone seen the Smurfs, Biskets etc..?)
Now if someone could only do some new episodes of "Johnny Quest" or
"Bullwinkle" ..
