< sacrificial character line > Read any good comics lately? I have, and yes, I feel compelled to talk about it... MACHINE MAN #1 Gee, just when I had resigned myself to the growing number of uninspired mini-series, Marvel cranks out something respectable. The art combo of Herb Trimpe & Barry Windsor-Smith was very good--I hope it lasts more than one issue! The not-too-distant future setting was handled pretty well and didn't *feel* like a retread of an oft used idea. Tom DeFalco's script was entertaining. All too often I've read "immediate future" type books that just didn't cut it, but this was a welcome exception. Even the language of the characters, laced with computer and high-tech colloquialisms sounded appropriate. And besides, it was fun! (and that's why I read comics, Joanne) The last couple issues of OMEGA MEN were downright interesting thanks to new scripter Doug Moench. I had hoped for some exciting developments in the post-Citadel war period, and now it seems more likely. Just based on his work on OM and AZTEC ACE, Moench seems to like taking wild concepts and paradoxes and weaving stories around them. So far, STAR*REACH CLASSICS has really immpressed me. With so darn many books being printed on Baxter stock these days, it's nice to pick up a book truly deserving this format! I wasn't into the *comics scene* ;-) when these came out in b&w, but I'm glad to see a reprisal of such exceptional work. It seems I've heard a lot of mixed opinions about the new artwork on NEW MUTANTS. I, for one, really like Sienkiewicz's (sp?) style. True, sometimes a character's face or a panel situation looks like something out of an acid trip, but I think it really enhances the frequently wierd storyline. Some quick quips: STARSLAYER just ain't the same with Hilary Barta doing the inks. Speaking of inks, I hope Marvel makes a decent choice for an inker to finish Byrne's pencils on ALPHA FLIGHT. The Wasp looks like she got permanently roasted in SECRET WARS #6 and yet she seems quite alive aside from SW. Any ideas? One nice thing about ALIEN WORLDS 3D--all the stories were top-notch for once. Now if they could just get this title and TWISTED TALES back on schedule..... The LEGION annual was pretty ordinary if not anti-climatic. BATMAN and the OUTSIDERS annual had a good story and OK art. Good story in the IRON MAN annual but I didn't like Akin & Garvey's inks over Luke McDonnell's pencils. That's it for now. Chuck
