[net.comics] When they found out!

Everybody who reads this newsgroup has at least a passing interest in
comics, right?

And a lot of us collect comics?

How do you go about explaining comics to the uninitiated? Parents can be
bad enough, they think that there may be 'something wrong with you' (:-)),
or drop hints like 'when are you giving up comics' ( to be read 'when are
you going to grow up?). However, what do you do when trying to impress
a person of the appropriate sex, you get back to your abode, and there is
Action #532 sitting on your coffee table (or worse, your bedstand)....

do you...
	1. make a maddened attempt to throw your coat over the comic?
	2. start making remarks about how 'comics are a great investment'
	3. figure if they think you're a mental case, that's their problem?
	4. try to find a way to get them interested...

Also, are there any ouple out there, where one reads/collects, and the other
doesn't? How does the SO feel about your habit?

Well?

I had ta laugh when I read your article! This happens to me quite often
and it's a rare individual who actually *understands*. I've gotten the
various sundry comments you mentioned plus a few scathing cracks about
the maturity of "anyone who still reads comics." I think I've run the
gamut from offering a plethora of terrific reasons for reading comics
to self-righteously NOT voluteering ANY reasons! My parents probably
consider it one of my least harmful eccentricities and a couple of my
friends have actually asked to borrow a few that I considered particularly
entertaining. Most people I know are apathetic about reading comics at
*our* age(s), but a couple more fervent individuals think I'm (we're) nuts!
As far as dates or other MOTAS are concerned, the responses I've gotten
have been comparatively mild and non-judgemental. Then again, one solitary
copy of Adventure on my nightstand isn't the case--I've got a special
bookcase next to my bed with about 30 regulars in neat little stacks.
I don't HIDE the fact that I read comics, but I don't dwell on it, either.
(except here--among friends-----safety in numbers and all that....)

                                              ...it's the rest of humanity
                                                 that's missing out!

You asked if there were couples where one collects and the other
doesn't. You bet. As to how she feels about it - she thinks I am crazy,
of course. (Actually, I give her plenty of other of evidence to support
that, so she has gotten used to my idiosyncracies).

I started reading comics when I was 19, so there was no
'parental pressure'. I was independent by then.

The person who started me reading comics was my girlfriend
at the time -- her comment was "You mean you don't know
who the X-Men are?"...No problem there.

As to what REALLY got me hooked: Elfquest and The Rocketeer.
