[net.comics] Comic Reviews --- Part 2 <Plus my reviews>

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (07/09/84)

Since there were so few comics I got this week that really interested me
much, I'm going to combine my reviews with my reply to Jerry:

First, old business....

CAP'N QUICK:

While I like this title, I would not put it up there with ZOT!
Zot's humor is more mainstream, less pun-ish (glad I didn't say PUNishing --
HAR HAR) than Cap'n Quick... strangely enough, I think of C.Q. as resembling
the old Frank L. Baum OZ stories more closely. It's a fine comic, but just
not up there with ZOT as constant entertainment.

Dalgoda: Complete agreement... Dalgoda & Crossfire have been the two debuts
this summer which have really caught my attention.

Mr. X: Not as focused as other Hernadez Bros. stuff, but worth it for the
opening graphics alone.

Stig's Inferno:
Hmm... I liked Mr. Templeton's art (It reminds me of Bill Elder's
from (where else) MAD magazine); I liked his opening letter to the reader; I
liked parts of the comic. But I'm afraid the slapstick is just not yocking
me up on it... this happened in NORMALMAN, too, so it may be that my sense
of humor does not bend that direction (it bends West Northwest, which
explains my enjoyment of FLAMING CARROT). Clean lines as an artist, but the
humor so far has left me cold... however, it's WAY too early to tell.

Now for my reviews:

The only thing I was truly ecstatic about this week was JOURNEY... the
ending to McAlisatre's visit with his friends was one of the few truly
moving endings I've seen in a while. I recommend it highly. Sable was a
bit tired this month, Fantastic Four is getting ludicrous (whoops! Dad is
off stepping in time!), Blue Devil is at it's usual level of excellence, and
BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS shows the major gift and problem Barr has... he does
everyday situations very well, but his superhero fight scenes suck! Why
can't he just find someone powerful enough to take on the whole Outsiders by
himself (that's what Bat's had in mind in the first place)?

Well, toodles...

"Cheese it, cheddar-breath, you can't fight America's Action Hero, see?"
