Actually, I like the French editions of Asterix. Some of the puns don't
translate ferpectly into English 8-). I picked up four of the books
when I was in Montreal in January, including "Le Fils d'Asterix", which
was, to say the least, very entertaining. The names are slightly different
in French, and my favorite character was forgotton!!

.. Obelix's little dog (Dogmatix in English) is called Idefix in French. He first appeared in Le tour de Gaule d'Asterix (Asterix and the Banquet) in front of a shop in Lutetia, and followed Asterix and Obelix all around Gaul until they got home again and Obelix adopted him! The bard is called Assurancetourix (not Assuratourcix), for "assurance tous risques". The chief is Abraracourcix (not Abracourcix), for "a bras raccourcis". Asterix was created in 1959 for the first issue of Pilote, a French magazine started by a group of comic-strip artists and writers. The first story was published in book form (hardcover, on good paper, like almost all European comics) in 1961. Twenty-four books were written by Rene Goscinny and drawn by Albert Uderzo up to 1977, when Goscinny died. (The twenty-fourth book did not appear until 1979, though. There was also a book about one of the Asterix films (Les douze travaux d'Asterix), not in comic-strip format.) Uderzo has continued to produce Asterix books by himself since Goscinny's death; Le grand fosse, L'odyssee d'Asterix (with an ancient Roman James Bond as villain!), and Le fils d'Asterix have appeared between 1980 and 1983. Asterix lives in a village on the coast in what is now Brittany, at the time of Julius Caesar. Although all Gaul (modern France) has been conquered by Caesar, Asterix's village cannot be defeated by the Romans (or anyone else) because of the magic potion brewed by the druid that gives the villagers superhuman strength. (Or maybe the village can't be defeated because of Goscinny's endless jokes and puns...) The first twenty-four books are published in English and French in North America by Dargaud Publications International in New York and Dargaud Canada in Montreal. The three by Uderzo alone are published in French by his own company (Editions Albert-Rene) and in English in the British Commonwealth by Hodder and Stoughton; I don't know if they're available in the USA.
