<Wonder Twin Powers.......Activate!>
Anyone see the old/new cartoon on ABC last Saturday:
"SuperFriends--the Legendary Super Powers Show"
A(nother) revamping of SuperFriends, this one introduces
FIRESTORM as a full JLA member! While the usual fare
animation- and story-wise, the show was interesting to
watch and compare with the "real" universe of the comic.
The character of Firestorm was handled very true to the book,
with only a few simplifications in his origin and powers.
The main villain, on the other hand, underwent substantial changes.
Think they could never bring Darkseid to a Saturday morning kiddie
cartoon show? Well keep on thinkin' it, 'cause they haven't
yet. The Darkseid on SuperFriends was the same in appearance,
but that's about it. He was more of an intergalactic gangster
with ambition than anything else (He wanted Wonder Woman as his BRIDE!!).
Using toned down "Omega Beams", he used a "Star Gate". (What's wrong with
a Boom Tube? It's sooooo Kirby!)
On the other hand, his son Kalibak was portrayed as the dumbshit
he is, and Dessad was also handled pretty well.
The only ones in the premiere were Bats, Supes, Robs, WW, Firestorm,
and Black Vulcan (yecchh! talk about tokens! he didn't even get
to go to Apokolips with the rest!). However, the opening "credits"
indicate all the other SuperFriends will be present from time to time,
including one other I couldn't identify. (He was fighting Luthor, I
believe, so I assume he's a good guy.)
Well, we'll see....
