[net.comics] Sex and Violence in the Mainstreams

eric@milo.UUCP (09/25/84)

This last week's batch of comics seems to emphasis a trend that I
have been seeing. DC is definitely pushing more sex and graphic violence.
What is unusual is that it is not in their limited distribution books, but
the mass market ones as well.

This month's "Jemm" portrays the sexual subjugation of the Saturnian
males. Granted, it is not dwelled upon, but it was thrown in (and not
necessarily important to the plot).

This month's "Flash" has a particularly gruesome closing shot of
an unconcious Flash, after getting it smack in the face with a morningstar.
Needless to say, his face is pretty messed up, complete with blood from
the eye and mouth.

I find this a little disturbing. I can accept such things in
comics which are aimed at an older audience, such as Teen Titans, or
Swamp Thing. But "Jemm" and "Flash" have been marketed as books for
a younger audience, and as such I am not sure why these scenes are showing
up. Am I off base on this, or have others noticed this trend?

(Never thought I would see myself turning into such a prude. Must
be getting old)

I don't see your comments as prude-ish at all, Eric. The closing scene in
Flash disturbed me almost as much as the fact there was no super-speed
action in this issue. You would think that someone who flicks bullets out
of their flight path, runs laps around the earth in seconds flat, and changes
clothes in 6/100 of a second (am I right on that one?) would've seen Big
Sir's weapon (morningstar?) LONG before it struck. Heck, with his reflexes
he should've instinctively shifted into vibratory mode the split-second that
thing even began to dimple his cheek! That's an annoying habit I've noticed
about Cary Bates--he slows down the Flash to get him into trouble and then
brings him back up to "normal" speed to get him out. That's a shoddy way
to compensate for a lack of a storytelling imagination!

Swamp Thing--one of my favorite books! Exit Comics Code symbol, enter
"Sophisticated Suspense"......I love it!
