[net.comics] Three Reviews

hsut@ee.UUCP (01/17/85)

This has been a really quiet newgroup lately...

A few interesting items from the past two weeks:

TIMESPIRITS 3
This has been a very entertaining book so far. The
teacher/student relationship is handled well (kind of like some of
the better-written Dr. Who episodes!) and the kid (Doot?) actually
shows some of his fiery temperament. Tom Yeates' art is just perfect
for the script, though it seems the coloring was a little off here
and there, at least in my copy. Mile High Futures (published by
that ridiculously overpriced store Mile High Comics in Colorado)
mentioned that Timespirits 4 will be an anthology with several artists,
including another Swamp Thing penciller Steven Bissette. Should
be interesting.

MOONSHADOW 1

Marvel's Epic line has been putting out some interesting
stuff, while I feel their regular line has stagnated. Perhaps the Epic
line doesn't get that much attention from Jim "I will write a sequel
to the most inane, meaningless, poorly written and sloppily drawn
mini-series in comic-book history" Shooter...

Anyway, Moonshadow is a hilarious little fantasy about
whimsical aliens and lovable characters. J.M. DeMatteis has written a
witty and "magical" script, quite different from his earlier Defenders
work (which I consider to be one of the high points of that book). The
art doesn't always work, but the good panels (and there are many)
almost glow with the subtle interplay of light and shadow that's impossible
in regular comic art. Recommended.

The Black Flame (Starslayer ??)

My first comic from this company, and I was impressed. Peter
Gillis does things here that he cannot do with the Defenders. Some of
the rhetoric was a little heavy-handed, but the concept and the
situations described were interesting and original. The art could be
a little more exciting, though. According to the preface, Blak Flame
was a backup feature in Starslayer and some other book. Can anyone
supply a list of the issues the strip appeared in? Thanks in advance...

Now we return you to the regular reviewers of this
