Just out of curiosity, has anyone read Kirby's "Hunger Dogs" and does anyone care? Kirby definitely seems to have lost a lot of the limelight to younger hands such as Byrne and Perez, and I wonder if anyone still appreciates the old master.

I read "Hunger Dogs", and was not terribly impressed. Nor was I with Captain Victory or Silver Star for Pacific. I was a big fan of the "New Gods" books when they were out, but either I have grown older or Kirby has started to loose it, but his stuff just doesn't have the sense of wonder that it originally had for me. Also thought the ending of "Hunger Dogs" was a cop out. Would really like to see him finish the thing, if for no other reason than so I don't have to read yet another third-rate revival by someone else. (Anyone else remember the various bad stories put out with the New Gods, finally ending in Adventure, I believe?) -- eric ...!seismo!umcp-cs!aplvax!osiris!eric

Yes, I have those stories (ending in Adventure), including the one that "revived" them after Kirby stopped writing them that appeared in "DC Presents" or some such. That's the one where Darkseid tells Orion that his (Darkseid's) heart has been hooked up to Earth's sun such that if Darkseid dies, the sun blows up (something like that). (Talk about cop outs!) Anyway, it occurred to me that somewhere along the way Apokolips needs to be devastated so that Darkseid can be resurrected to fight the Legion. Then, it occurred to me: What's going to happen to Darkseid, et al, during COIE?!? The other Monitor (whatever he is) IS aware of Darkseid, and plans to take care of him. Hmm...

And if that isn't proof of the other Monitor's power, I don't know what is. I read the "Plague Dogs", and thought it rated about a D, which is very sad, as the best 4 villans in comicdom (in my opinion) are 1. Darkseid 2. Darkseid 3. Darkseid 4. Darkseid He might also have the next couple of slots too. I mean, Magneto, Glactus, Lex Luthor and the Joker combined aren't as nasty, powerful, intelligent, well motivated, or believable. When he said he wanted the Anti-Life equation to rule the Universe, I believed him. Joe Kalash kalash@berkeley ucbvax!kalash

Sadly, I have to admit that there was one thing which disappointed me with "The Hunger Dogs", namely Kirby's characterization of Darkseid. I agree with Joe Kalash when he says that Darkseid is one of the best (if not the best) villains to ever grace the comic page. But things sure have changed for Darkseid and gang lately on Apokolips. In the initial run of Kirby's Fourth World epic, Darkseid was truly an awe-inspiring entity-unquestioned master of his world and filled with motives which were pretty much above and beyond the scope of the average comic book villain. Just look at Darkseid's speech to Glorious Godfrey in Forever People #3 to see what I mean. You have to admire a villain who thinks like that. However, in the current versions, most of the populace is in revolt and the big D seems to spend more time running from danger and mourning for "the good old days" than anything else. This is just not the Darkseid I used to know and love. Rather this is the Darkseid of the terrible "Super Powers" series. Somehow, Kirby really lost his way between here and 1973. I really wonder if this is what Kirby had in mind for Darkseid all along.
