The holempathic matrix crystal that Rachel is holding in X-Men 199 was a gift from the Empress Lilandra to Jean Gray's parents, which Lilandra gave to them after Jean died. Lilandra explained to them that it contained the essence of Jean's personality; the scene occurred in "Elegy", which I think is X-Men 138.
