[net.comics] Englehart, Creeper, Superman, The Foozle, etc. --????

This is a long and involved story... Bear with me.

Steve Englehart was touted as the finest writer in comics, back in
the early and middle seventies. He was working for Marvel, writing
the Avengers and Captain America, and who knows what all else. He
and Marvel had a falling out, and he went to work for DC. He wrote
approximately 10 spectacular issues of JLA. He also wrote the Batman
series which ran in Detective, and is currently being reprinted
by DC as "Shadow of the Batman." He also wrote 3 ro four issues of
Mister Miracle, when it was restarted. A fairly large amount of this
work was illustrated by Marshall Rogers.

Nice story -- what? [Sorry, I watched DangerMouse last night -- what?]

Anyway, as things progressed, Steve became disenchanted with the way he
was being treated by the people at DC. He had been commissioned to do
a 3-issue miniseries of Madame Xanadu as well as an issue of either DC
Comics Presents with the Creeper, or Brave and Bold, with the Creeper.
(Up until about 2 weeks ago, I couldn't remember which.) Due to some
arguments over page rate, Englehart pulled back his scripts. The
first issue of the Madame Xanadu mini-series became the Madame Xanadu
one-shot. The rest of the mini series became (supposedly) Scorpio
Rose. The *blank* and Creeper story became the first Foozle story.

It ran in the first two(?) issues of Eclipse Monthly (which was no
way, no how monthly). This story is currently being reprinted by
the good folks at Eclipse, as the Foozle #3. And.(drum roll, please)

The currnt story in DC Comics Presents is an Englehart story (illustrated
by Keith Giffen) starring (you guessed it) the Creeper.

Are these the same story, redrawn and reworked. Did Steve Englehart get
paid twice for writing the same story. On the other hand, does Bill Mantlo
get paid at all for that trash he writes. Does Bullwinkle have antlers.
What is the capital of Assyria?

I'd like to hear what some of you other comic buffs (Moriarty, put your
clothes back on, not that kind of buff) have to say about this.

Respectfully yours,
This is a job for

GINO

Well, Gino, I'm always happy to bring my vast knowledge of comics history
out of the bottom drawer of my dresser and wear it for all you munchkins to
see. Being an insider to the comics world, I know many things, and I
believe I can help you here.

There is NO capital of Assyria. When Dr. Doom conqured it and it's
population of Kree-spawned wombats, he destroyed their capital so that they
would have no symbol of ethnic pride.

And Bullwinkle had antlers the last time I looked. Wait... yes, he does.

(PS I have no idea about the Creeper question, but your hypothesis seems
 plausible. Good night.).
