[net.comics] Stories that don't fit anywhere

francis@osu-eddie.UUCP (RD Francis) (10/08/85)

I started talking about this in another posting, but I thought it deserved
its own. Has anyone else ever been bothered by the story that it is
literally impossible to fit into continuity? The best example that I can
recall in recent years happened in FF/Marvel 2-in-1. Ben turned human
for a short while, then got changed back into the Thing. By the time he
was the Thing again, Reed had lost his stretching powers. The whole
bunch were captured by the Frightful Four, and held for ransom -- which
is important because Mayor Beame ( NYC's mayor at the time ) called all
the presidential candidates up to ask for money, one of them happening to
mention that the election ( 1976 ) is about a week away. So, the FF
eventually get free, with Reed temporarily lost. Even when he gets back
from the Negative Zone, his powers are still gone. The group breaks up
about six months later for the span of a year ( our time ) during which
Reed gets his powers back ( issue 196 ). These storylines took place in
FF 166-200, all told.
All well and good, except that the Thing had a team-up mag called
Marvel 2-in-1. There, we see him in his human state in issues 20 and 21.
In issue 26 we see the start of a plotthread which ties together issues
26-36. Well, in 27, Ben has definitely been restored to rockiness, but
Reed has not yet lost his stretching abilities. They are guarding Jimmy
Carter at his inauguration ( 1977!! ). You say, " Well, maybe Reed had
his powers back by then"? Unfortunately, in 36, which, as I said, is tied
to 26 by one thin continuing plotthread, Reed has still not lost his
powers, though he makes a comment that he is in the process ( something that
Ben didn't know until right before they were completely gone; and both his
being giving the knowledge of the impending loss and the loss itself happened
while the FF were in combat against Galactus ). This entire sequence of
issues was obviously so poorly edited that it's pitiful, but I'm afraid that
leaves us holding a bag of inconsistencies.
Do things like this ever bother anyone else, or am I just being
weird? ( Maybe I should have posted this to net.bizarre? )

By the by, I third the vote for Judge M. Wapner to sock it to
ole Jim.

PS Thanks for the corrections on my THOR 362 note -- I only had a quick
glance ot the scene myself, and Warlock makes a lot of sense...

PPS To all those who have sent me messages over the past few months --
I think I have the mailer figured out now. If you'd like to re-establish
contact, drop me a wire ( or at least a line ).

No, I'm bothered by people who worry about this.

Repeat after me:

 It's only a story...

DC is guilty of it too. The one that comes to my mind occurred when the
Spectre was starring in (Weird) Adventure. Jim Corrigan ( Spectre's
human identity who is a police liet. ) is being bother by a nosy reporter
at a crime scene. He pushes the man toward a uniformed officer

Jim : "Here! Take care of 'Clark Kent' here."

Cop : "Duh, Gee, Are you really Superman?

Continuity fans take note ! This is Earth ONE!
