[net.comics] STARSTRUCK

jeffh@brl-sem.ARPA (the Shadow) (10/10/85)

I just wanted to second (third? fourth?) the recommedation for
Starstruck. If financial pressures ever forced me to drop all
but one title from my buy list, this is the one I'd continue
buying. Noting the lack of acclaim in this group, I was on the
verge of writing a review myself, but I was beaten to it.

Anyway, I think the art is the finest I have seen, anywhere.

The story (which always carries a book for me even if the art
is not up to par) is an interesting morass of political intrigue
and general soap opera-ish infighting. Although it appeared to
be hopelessly tangled on the first reading, it has proven to be
very rich and satisfying on subsequent tours through the story.
Which is not to say that I didn't enjoy it the first time. I did.
I kind of like the challenge of unraveling a tangled plotline.
The only problem with the book is that the characters sometimes
come off a little stereotyped, but that is commonplace in stories
where the plot rules.

The upshot: find someone who has the graphic novel and early issues.
Read them. If you are the least bit intriuged by the story, read
them again. Then decide whether you want to invest the time and
effort into tracking down the early issues for your own collection.

(BTW, anybody got a spare copy of issue #2 they don't need?)

I already responded to Stuart Yoshida by mail about his response to my post-
ing about STARSTRUCK. I don't feel like repeating the whole thing here, so I
won't. Suffice it to say that once the last issue (at least, from Epic) is
out, and I have the time, I planned (and have before all this discussion
occurred) to read the whole thing through again in one fell swoop to see if
it makes any better sense.

However, there is something that I'd like to mention here regarding STARSTRUCK.
I came across something the other week at a local comics shop (SUPERHERO
UNIVERSE in Harvard Square, for those in the area) that will be of interest
to STARSTRUCK devotees. It's a copy of the script for the play STARSTRUCK
(A SPACE OPERA). It's a trade paperbound book (graphic novel format --- ie.
8-1/2X11) published by Broadway Play Publishing, Inc. The copyright page
says that it was published in March 1985, but it appears that it just
showed up in the comics shops (I suspect that until now, it's only been
in the drama circles and not the comics circles). It has a dozen full-page
character illos by Kaluta, as well as a color cover from same. It also has
eight pages of color photos from the stage production. There's no price info
on the book itself, but the comics shop was asking $10.00 for it.
