Just saw Bakshi's Fritz the Cat over the weekend. I was really surprised to see in the opening credits "based on characters created by Robert Crumb". Does anyone know which Crumb strips these animals appeared in? I found Fritz to be more thought-provoking than most animated features from the early 70s. There are some hilarious (and bawdy) sequences. It's X-rated for the sex scenes, tho I can't see how anyone can be turned on by funny animals having sex. The visual impact of the animation is inferior to later Bakshi efforts like American Pop; Fritz the Cat simply looks like animated Robert Crumb, perhaps toned down a little. The absurdity of funny animals with human foibles taking drugs, having orgies and inciting racial violence is typical of Crumb's black humor. Despite all it's faults, I enjoyed Fritz the Cat, and I recommend it to anyone interested in animation (if only for historical interest). Bill Hsu pur-ee!hsut
