Jumping on the bandwagon, here is the first of my comic reviews. I'm sure you will find these reviews as helpful as you find anyone else's. The only opinion you can ever trust is your own. Only you know what you like. This week's books: Alpha Flight, Alter Ego, Captain America, Cerebus, Firestar, Fury of Firestorm, GrimJack, Justice League of America, Spider-Man Rating System ---------------- **** - Excellent *** - Very good ** - Good * - Poor Alpha Flight (Marvel) * Alpha Flight did not seem to be going anywhere under John Bryne. Here was a super-hero team that was more of a non-team than the Defenders were. I was on the verge of giving up both this book and the Hulk when the creative switch was made. Suddenly new life was breathed into the Hulk, but not into Alpha Flight. It still lack a sense of direction. About the only good thing I can say about this book is that it isn't suffering from the anti-mutant plague that ruined X-Men and New Mutants. Also, more maybe info about Wolverine's origin. Good for dealers getting more money out of the book in a few months, but not very interesting. Alter Ego (First) *** I enjoyed this one. Of course I can see where it won't appeal to a lot of people. Roy Thomas and I both seem to have an intense liking for the Golden Age heroes, any Golden Age heroes. This book is a chance to see even more of those famous and not so famous guys and gals from the 30's and 40's in action. Captain America (Marvel) ** Captain America and Hawkeye against the dumbest group of villians I have ever seen. Cap and Hawkeye work well together and should be facing some villians a bit more worthy of their attention. The departure of Bernie was not unexpected, but not appreciated. While I think it unlikely that Captain America would realistically ever get marries, Bernie was an interesting character. I hope she will return soon. Cerebus (Aardvark-Vanhiem) ** So, Most Holy meets Tarim on Earth. Lord Julius is always welcome by me, but can someone explain why Sophia came back. I thought she was gone for good, or at least a couple more issues. Cerebus is still not as good as it used to be, but compared to most of what is being published by other companies, it is still worth the money. Firestar (Marvel) *** The only book from Marvel featuring mutants as the star worth reading. I like Angelica and I LOVE the White Queen. I haven't seen this kind of villany in a long time. Cameos by Hellion members Empath and Tarot were good. I hope Firestar does not leave to join the X-Men or New Mutants. Even she can't make me read them. Fury of Firestorm (DC) *** The Firestorm/Blue Devil team-up is finally over and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was handled very well even though these two are not suited to work together. Can't wait till next month as Firestorm goes on trial. To bad Matt Murdock is busy right now, Firestorm could sure use him. GrimJack (First) ** The Trade Wars are finally over and it looks like Gaunt will be returning to the types of stories that hooked me from the beginning. Gaunt should not be invloved in Cynosure shattering adventures month after month. Most of his cases should not affect Cynosure in any great way. He is just one lone man in a VERY big city. I was thinking about not reading this anymore, but now I will stick around. Justice League (DC) ** So, members of th old League have to rescue the new League. Not sur- prising. What is surprising: 1) J'onn J'onzz not being able to lead the League. Bull. He is a great choice, but he wasn't given a chance. 2) Batman will lead the League. If he is doing this just to show up or attack the Outsiders this is a big mistake. 3) Superman doesn't like Batman anymore. What is this. I know they broke up in the last issue of World's Finest, but I find it hard to believe that a friendship that has lasted as long as theirs could end with such animosity. 4) What will Aquaman do when he returns to find Batman running the League? This could be a great plotline in the making. Spider-Man (Marvel) * My last Spider-Man issue in any incarnation. I was sticking around to see who the Hobgoblin is, but again all we learn is who he isn't. The soap oprea life of Peter Parker and friends has finally reached my gag reflex. They are all acting like such jerks I don't care what happens to any of them. Star-Lord They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally they became heroes.
