Maybe it was ectoplasmic spittle...?! Besides, wasn't that when they had him trapped in some sort of "stasis" field? Maybe the field partially materialized him. Who knows? In any case, I remember reading some of the classic Deadman stories done by Neal Adams, and once in a while Neal would give Deadman a shadow!
