[net.comics] New Marvel: THE 'NAM

slrichte@uok.UUCP (03/12/86)

The following is a Marvel news release I received March 11. It is dated
March 7, and written by Steve Saffel, Marvel's Promotional Manager for
 Direct Sales.

                      THE 'NAM - AN UNPRECEDENTED
                      CHRONICLE OF AMERICA AT WAR

A soldier, fresh out of training, leaves for Washington as he ships
out for combat duty in Vietnam. The year is 1966.

This is the beginning of THE 'NAM, a new monthly series written by
veteran Doug Murray, pencilled by Michael Golden, and inked by Armando
Gil. By the time it is complete, it will be an 8-year chronicle of
American combat action in that war.

THE 'NAM will follow the action seen by members of the Army 25th
Mechanized Infantry Division, begginning early in 1966 and continuing
 through the entire war.

"If someone has every issue, they will have a month-by-month drama-
tized history of the Vietnam War," Editor Larry Hama explained. "This
is an 8-year long limited series. It will carry on chronologiclly right
up to the last helicopter that left the embassy roof in Saigon."

The series will involve an ever-changing cast of characters in the
myriad combat situations that arose in the jungles of Southeast Asia.
New players will enter the scene as others are sent home or die in action.

A division such as the 25th Infantry can contain more than 10,000
persons includingg artillery, aircraft, tank and HQ personnel, engineers
and MP's [sic]. "We'll cover it all," Larry said. "A division is the
largest unit that moves as a single force - the next step down from an
 army group itself.

The 1966-1974 time periood was chosen to coincide with active U.S.
military involvement in combat situations. To accurately produce a
project of this magnitude Doug Murray, a Vietnam veteran himself, had to
gather a tremendous amount of research material, including microfilm of
the NEW YORK TIMES for the years covered.

Michael Golden's intricate, detailed artwork lends itself perfectly
to the mood, settings and action depicted in the series. "It will be
done in Michael's unique half-realistic, half-caricature style," Larry
said. "He's come up with a very different look for the book."

Golden has collaborated with Doug Murray on the "5th to the 1st"
series appearing in SAVAGE TALES. Formerally the regular artist for
MICRONAUTS, he has also lent his talents to THE AVENGERS, X-MEN, and
G.I. JOE (working with Larry Hama).

Issue #1 ships June 17, direct and newsstand, priced at 75 cents.

                             A Mini-Review

Looking at the stack of comics that I'd bought but had not found time
to read, I decided I'd better get to them...unfortunately, the scarred
side of the coin came face up and I had to wade through the first part
of the 'Scourge Trilogy' in CAPTAIN AMERICA #318.
