We like to grow plants in large pots (up to two feet in diameter) on our apartment balcony. Thus far we have grown only petunias, but we now would like to be more adventurous. Does anyone out there have ideas and or experience? In particular, we would like to know if rose bushes and small conifers can successfully be grown in pots. Also, does anyone know how to construct larger, permanent structures such as those made of railroad ties often seen on public rooftop patios? By the way, we have tried window boxes hanging from the balcony railing. We found that our petunias couldn't take the exposure to wind. Can anyone suggest hardier plants? (We have a western exposure.)
