The book *Perennials* in the Time-Life Gardening series covers perennials for U.S. quite thoroughly. It's well-organized, and has lots of charts, diagrams, and accurate and attractive illustrations. The series as a whole is worth investigating. Give self-seeding annuals a try, too.
