Why do books recommend tearing up one's strawberry patch every 2 or 3 years, and starting over again? Is it because of diseases? Do commercial and U-PICK places do this? We are thinking of trying strawberries next year, though several people have told us they've given up between the birds and slugs, and just go to the U-PICK places. (Beaverton, Oregon). We are digging up the potatoes. There are tomatoes on the plants, but they are still green. The corn is about 1 1/2 - 2 feet high. We ate the peas and snow peas. The squash, melons, and cucumber didn't fare too well in the cold, rainy weather we've had. Besides, the day after I transplanted the plants, we had 2 hailstorms.
