[net.garden] Alternative to Roto-tillers & Seed Catalogs

One thing you potential roto-tiller owners might look into is a
garden tool called a U-bar. It is a bar with tines sticking
down and two long handles sticking up. You use it by sticking
the tines into the ground, jumping on the bar if the soil is
hard to drive the thing all the way into the ground, and then
pulling back on the two handles. It is much easier to use than
a shovel or whatever, mainly because of the extra leverage and
because you use it standing up (i.e., with your back straight,
not hunched over). It may not be as easy as a roto-tiller, but
it's cheaper and gives you exercise. People I know use it to
double dig hard Silicon Valley clay soil (ever try to dig in
silicon? :-)

Also for a catalog of seed companies and their catalogs, try
"The Seed Finder". You can get both of these things from
"Bountiful Gardens" 5798 Ridgewood Rd., Willits, CA 95490.
