[net.garden] COMPOSTING

carmine@qusavx.UUCP (Carmine Scavo) (06/06/84)

Neither dog droppings nor cat litter should EVER be composted (at
least according to ORGANIC GARDENING magazine). The temperature
of a typical compost heap does get high enough to kill all the
pathogenic organisms that exist in either cat or dog digestive
tracts. You could be setting yourself up for a good case of some
pretty exotic diseases.

By the way, ORGANIC GARDENING is a really good magazine (published
by Rodale Press of Emmaeus (sp?), PA. They regularly run practical
articles on how to keep your garden free of both types of baddies
(pests and pesticides). They also evaluate different types of
products (it seems there was an article within the last year on
different types of composters -- can't remember which issue).
