My parents had an 8-10 foot diffenbachia for years. They discovered that you can cut the stem into about 8-inch lengths and bury each one in a pot, vertically, and after a month or two, get a new plant. They usually buried them in a vertical position, I think with an inch or so above the soil. They also had success with rooting the top of the plant, by burying the cut stem pretty deeply in a large pot. Most of their friends and neighbors ended up with baby deefies as a result. Hope this helps. Mary Sue Rowan hpfcla!marysue

(oo) I don't know if there's a newsgroup for house plants, so I thought I'd try this one. I have a large dieffenbachia exotica (name of "Deefy") that's getting too tall to stand up on its own. The plant is healthy enough, growing a new leaf about once every two weeks this time of year, but I've had to truss it up with string and wooden slats to keep it from falling down under its own weight. Does anybody know of a low-risk way to repot this plant so that the stalk will send out new roots further up, say, a foot or so, thereby giving more support to the leaves? Now, Deefy is the closest thing I've got to a pet -- I've had it for about three years now -- and I'd hate to see anything happen to it.
