45223wc@houxe.UUCP (07/20/84)

We have these small yellow hairy caterpillar-like bugs eating our
bean plants. What are they and how do I get rid of them? They are
only about half an inch long, max. Thanks In Advance.

According to the pictures in "Economic Insects of New Jersey"
(which is available from your county extension service),
you have the larval form of Mexican Bean Beatles.

According to "New Jersey Vegetable Pest Control Recommendations"
(same source) the remedies of choice are Rotenone Dust or
Malathion. Both have 1 day wait before harvest. Beetles, larvae,
and egg masses are listed as "easy to pick".
