[net.garden] getting rid of gophers

mae@weitek.UUCP (Mike Ekberg) (05/16/85)

The following suggestions for getting rid of gophers is taken from
some info distributed by Common Ground of Palo Alto:

It seems that gophers do not like strong odors(poor things). Putting
something offensive down their holes seems to encourage them to
seek another home. Suggestions include sardines, rag soaked in strong
chemical like gasoline, or male human urine.

Also, some plants are posionous to gophers. I believe daffodils are one
such plant. There is also a plant called gopher plant(I think it might
be called Euphorbia but am not sure). I think gopher plant is toxic
to people.

I think you also might contemplate purchasing a gopher snake.

Get some manure from the local zoo, preferably from a large
cat, and spread it around. It will do the garden good, and keep *everything*
out of it, including deer, rabbits and the neighbor's dogs.

There is a plant called caper spurge which has a high boron
content. It's pretty effective at keeping away moles, so it might
work for gophers as well.

Moth balls also seem to work.

My uncle swears that putting X-lax in the run (pun intended) gets
rid of gophers every time. He has a theory on why this is the case
which I will not repeat on family radio.

X-lax is probably not speled gud...
