My Germain Shorthair Pointer was very effective at keeping away rabbits. I never realized how much so until she passed away last winter, and now the farm is crawling with rabbits. I can't be sure, but I don't think she ever killed any; she just loved to chase them, and rabbits being sensible creatures, they packed up their families and moved to a better neighborhood!

I have also spread 'bloodmeal', a very good organic fertilizer, in little piles around the perimeter and in the center of the garden. Bloodmeal is actually ground bone and marrow, and is used as a feed supplement for animals, fertilizer, etc. It is usually available in little (2Kg) bags for the home gardener; I goofed and my farmer neighbour bought me a 50Kg sack. One side effect of putting 20Kg (half sack) of the stuff in the garden is that I now have tomatoes the size of apple trees, cucumbers that reach out and strangle small children and other garden pests, and a pumpkin that has "Hertz- rent a limo" on the side...
