You can do it with screening, but you need tin snips -- to cut in from
one side to the center, so you can slide the screening in sideways
rather than trying to get something down over the top of the plant.  Of
course, you can also use the tin snips to make a bit of a hole in the center
for stems.  Works for keeping bluejays from digging in pots, anyway.
