Can anyone tell me how to grow portulaca successfully in the Boston region? I grew them last year and took good care of them and watered them, and while other flowers thrived, the portulacas grew barely large enough to produce a couple of flowers. Give me tips on sunshine, soil, water, etc. Your advice is appreciated. (either by mail or posting). cht@mit-eddie

> Can anyone tell me how to grow portulaca successfully in the Boston region? > Give me tips on sunshine, soil, water, etc. SUN, water if they look dry, SUN, a little fertilizer (not too much), SUN, mine do well in sandy soil, and SUN. The difference between those receiving 1/2 day of sun and those getting a full day is amazing. I mean, bushy plants with lots of flowers 2" across as opposed to skinny little guys with one or two 1" flowers. Those getting less than 3 hours of direct light do not seem to enjoy life at all. They are also trivially easy to root - snap or cut off a shoot (preferably one without a flower or bud on it), knock off the lower pair of leaves on it, and either put directly in soil (I get about a 60% success rate this way) or in the top of a beer bottle filled with water (90% success). They should be ready to plant in two weeks.
