[net.garden] Squirrels and human hair

dnc@bonnie.UUCP (Don Corey) (07/31/85)

A previous posting suggested that hanging human hair from a fruit tree will
keep away squirrels. Has anybody been successful with this technique?
Do I have to hang clumps of hair, or can I empty my electric razor into
a cloth bag and hang that from the tree? Does anyone have a receipt for squirrel
stew, ideally one that uses fresh apricots.

Maybe the razor clippings will have enough odor, but best bet would be go to
a barber shop, or better, a beauty salon. They have plenty of hair clippings.
Put them near the base of the branches so the squirrels would have to cross
them to get to the fruit.

I don't know about the receipt for squirrel stew however. I never gave or sold
anyone squirrel stew so of course nobody ever gave me a receipt for it :-).
(Would it be tax deductible?). Fresh apricots sounds like a difficult medium
to write a receipt on anyhow :-).

Oh.... you mean RECIPE! Ask in net.cooks. (Probably any good rabbit stew
recipe would do--they are both rodents, as are also rats and mice.)

I've found mothballs to work better as a repellent than human hair or other
repellents for everything from gophers to deer. Just hang 3-4 in a mesh (an
old nylon stocking or cheese cloth) in the tree.

NOTE: Try to get the "old-fashioned" mothballs made from NAPTHALENE. These
last about 10 times longer than the new ones made from PARADICHLOROBENZENE.
